Today, we revisit Tom Jones and his emotionally charged 1970 hit, "I (Who Have Nothing)" — a dramatic ballad where diamonds symbolize an emotional divide between wealth and true love.
In this stirring performance, Jones takes on the role of a heartbroken underdog — a man deeply in love but painfully aware that he cannot compete with a wealthy rival. While the rich man expresses affection through glittering gifts, Jones’s character can only offer raw, unfiltered emotion.
Jones sings, “He, he buys you diamonds / Bright, sparkling diamonds / But believe me, dear when I say / That he can give you the world / But he’ll never love you the way / I love you.”
Diamonds, in this case, are not just beautiful objects; they are powerful symbols of status, access and influence. They represent everything the narrator lacks — and everything his rival uses to win her over.
The tragedy unfolds as the singer watches from afar, his “nose pressed up against the window pane,” as the woman he loves is swept into a world he cannot enter.
Originally adapted from the Italian song "Uno Dei Tanti," the English-language version was written by legendary hitmaking duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The song first gained traction in 1963 with recordings by Ben E. King and Shirley Bassey, both of whom delivered memorable interpretations. Over the decades, it has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Luther Vandross, Neil Diamond, Petula Clark and Liza Minnelli.
Still, it’s Jones’s version that resonates most powerfully. His booming baritone and theatrical delivery elevate the song’s themes of longing and despair, helping it climb to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 on the UK Singles Chart in 1970.
More than five decades later, Jones remains a force in the music world. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006, he has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and continues to perform to sold-out audiences. At 85, he’s embarking on his 2026 “Final Ride” tour and remains a beloved coach on The Voice UK.
